How Spam Works
How Spam Works
When you learn how spam works, you can begin to see all of the ways you can prevent this nuisance in your life.
The Intention of Spam
What you might not know is that spam is not always as malicious as it’s intended to be. Some mailings that you get truly are meant to inform you of new information or a new product to buy. But if you haven’t signed up for that list or you don’t necessarily want that information delivered to your email, then it’s technically spam. What spam wants to do is:
- Sell you something.
- Inform you.
- Steal financial information.
- Install a virus into your computer.
- Steal your money.
Spam works by sending out as many emails as possible to as many people as possible. In doing so, just having a small percentage of positive or profitable responses makes the spam campaign a success.
The Law and Spam
Technically speaking, however, it is illegal to send someone spam if they have not signed up for the mailing or requested information. But since computer programs can steal email addresses easily from online sources, stopping and preventing spam is harder than ever. Notorious spammers are also hard to trace as they tend to use other people’s computers to do the work, leaving them as anonymous as possible. But when caught, there are serious fines and even jail time for those who do large campaigns of spam.
Anti spam programs can work in many cases, but choosing the right one will help to ensure you’re getting the benefits you expect from these programs.
