Spam: What is it?

Spam – when used in connection with computers and the Internet, not as a dinner enhancer – is unwanted messages, and that is generally commercial in nature. These messages are delivered via various media outlets such as email, instant messages, forum posting, etc.

Spam has been an issue since the Internet was made available to the public (in the mid-1990′s), and some estimates cite that spam emails are up to 85% of the total emails sent today.

Many spam messages are simply sales pitches, trying to entice the recipient into buying some product or service. Others are scams and frauds, trying to deceive the recipient and get him or her to provide personal information (such as bank account information, passwords to website accounts, or social security numbers) or send money.

There are three main ways that spam is delivered:

1. Email – email messages are sent to the recipient directly, right to his or her in-box. In general, the message is broadcast to thousands (or even millions) of people at one time. Spammers will often purchase lists of email addresses in order to find new people to target, and many email addresses are obtained via third parties. In other words, when you sign up to receive a newsletter or something similar with one vendor, the fine print on the terms and conditions says you will possibly receive messages from other parties because their list is rented or sold periodically.

Instant messages – IM is quickly becoming a popular medium for delivering spam, mainly because firewalls and anti-spam software do not generally filter out these types of spam.

Blogs – leaving spam blog comments is also growing in popularity, with spammers using both bots and live people to deliver the messages.

Spam is used by businesses and spammers alike because the costs are minimal as sending emails or using bots costs very little and the potential payout can be very high for these businesses.
