If you use a computer and connect to the Internet, you run the risk of getting a computer virus. Hackers are always looking for chances to infect a weak computer. Viruses are designed to cause chaos and trouble on your computer. Staying protected can decrease your risk of dealing with the headaches associated with the viruses. Follow these tips to keep your computer safe:

Install an Anti-Virus Program
Select a good anti-virus program, such as Norton or Kaspersky, and keep it on whenever your computer is running. An anti-virus program won’t work if you don’t turn it on, and you don’t keep it updated. You may want to consider more than one program for added protection.

Update Your System
Even if you have good anti-virus protection, it won’t work if your operating system and other programs aren’t current. Configure your system for automatic updates and follow the instructions provided to keep your computer safe.

Use a Firewall
Designed to keep hackers out, firewalls offer another layer of protection. Turn your settings on, although you may need to adjust the settings if you have trouble viewing your favorite Web sites.

Visit Secure Sites
Avoiding sites with potential viruses will decrease the chance of your computer getting infected. Stick with sites that you know are safe. Often, search engines will indicate if a site could pose a risk.  Some sites like openoffice.org and the Ares website are both secure and offer free downloads.

Watch Your Email
Make sure you know where an email cam from and who sent it. If you aren’t sure, scan the email or delete it.

Download with Caution
To make sure you don’t download files with viruses attached, scan any file before you open it. Some files will actually have viruses embedded in them.

Watch for Trouble
If your computer starts to run slowly, has trouble putting up, or displays other unusual traits, take it in for service. Viruses can wreak havoc on your system, so talk to an expert is you notice anything out of the ordinary.
